Chandigarh, a city nestling in the foothills of Shivalik hills, was constituted as a Union Territory on 1st November 1966. It is mainly a commercial city. Irrigated area is 1,450 hectares. The main crops cultivated are wheat, maize, vegetables and fodder. Some of the major industrial units of Chandigarh are electric metres, auto cables and parts, cycle rims, antibiotics, steel fabrication doors and sanitary fittings, electronic components, utensils, machine parts, chemicals, ayurvedic drugs and medical equipment. All villages are electrified. The City has hot summers, cold winters, and average annual rainfall is 107 cm.
