The State of Chhatisgarh was
formed on 1st November 2000, by the bifurcation of Madhya Pradesh.
Tribals constitute 32.5 per cent of the population. It is a hilly region
and forests cover 45 per cent of the land area. About 0.95 million
hectares of the land is under irrigation. Agriculture provides
livelihood to 80 per cent of the population. The main agricultural
produce of the region is rice, maize, millets, vegetables and fruits,
timber, bamboo and tendu. The State has rich mineral resources of
dolomite, iron ore, coal, bauxite, limestone, diamond, alexenderite,
corrundum, tin and gold. Main industries of the State are steel,
aluminium and cement. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild, and the
average annual rainfall is 95.4 cm.
