The Union Territory of Delhi
became a State in 1991. With many composite cultures, it is the largest
commercial centre in North India. More than 75 per cent of the
cultivated area of 74,000 hectares is irrigated. The major food crops
are wheat, maize, fruits and vegetables. It has several industrial units
manufacturing television, tape recorders, light engineering machines,
automobile parts, bicycles, sports goods, footwear, textiles, medicines,
fertilizers, leather goods, electronics, tele-communications, software
and information technology. It has severe summers and cold winters. The
average annual rainfall is 61 cm.
