Manipur became a full fledged
State on 21st January 1972. It has two distinct regions, the hill tracts
comprising 5 districts, and the plains with 4 districts. Agriculture is
the largest source of livelihood of the people. More than 54,100
hectares of land are under irrigation and forests cover about
three-fourths of the area. The State has a large tribal population.
Besides agricultural crops like rice and maize, rare flowers such as
orchids are also grown. Major industries in the State are spinning
mills, electronics and cement. Winters in the State are cold, summers
mild, and the average annual rainfall is 252 cm.
