Mizoram was accorded Statehood
on 20th February 1987. It is a mountainous State with a large tribal
population. Agriculture forms the mainstay of about 60 per cent of the
population. The irrigated land area is 7,260 hectares. The main crops of
the region are orange, lemon, pineapple, papaya, rice, sugarcane,
tapioca, cotton and ginger. The industries being promoted in the State
are agro and forest based, handloom and handicraft, electronics,
sericulture, tea and fruit preservation. Winters are cold, summers
pleasant, and the average rainfall is 250 cm.
