Nagaland became a Union
Territory of India in 1957 and was accorded Statehood on 1st December
1963. It is a mountainous State inhabited mainly by tribals. Agriculture
is the main occupation of around 85 per cent of the people. The
irrigated land area is 6,736 hectares. Rice and sugar cane are the
important agricultural produce of the State. The main industries in the
State are sugar, pulp and paper mills, plywood, cement, handlooms and
handicrafts. All the 1200 villages are electrified. Winters are
moderately cold, and summers warm. The average annual rainfall is 250
cm.
