The State of Orissa has four
geographic regions - a northern plateau, central river basin, eastern
hills and coastal plains. Agriculture provides employment to 64 per cent
of the people. The irrigated land area is 2.485 million hectares and
rice, sugarcane and oilseeds are the major crops cultivated. About 70
per cent of the villages are electrified. The major industries in Orissa
include steel, petroleum products, aluminium based industry, yarn,
automobile, drugs and pharmaceuticals. Paradip is the only major port of
the State. Winters are mild, summers hot and the average annual rainfall
is 149 cm.
