Pondicherry, an erstwhile French Colony, consists of 4 territorial units - Pondicherry and Karaikal located in Tamil Nadu, Mahe bound on 3 sides by Kerala, and Yanam bound by Andhra Pradesh. They became a part of India in 1954. Nearly 45 per cent of the population of the Union Territory is engaged in agriculture and allied activities. More than 90 per cent of the cultivated area is irrigated. Rice, pulses, sugarcane, groundnut and cotton are the chief crops. The industrial sector manufactures items such as textiles, sugar and yarn, spirit and beer, potassium chlorate, auto parts, disposable syringes, washing machines, electric motors, plastic components, steel tubes, LPG cylinders, oxygen and acetylene gas and computers. All regions in Pondicherry were electrified in 1972. It has warm summers, and mild winters with an average annual rainfall of 100 cm.
