Punjab is a State
criss-crossed with many rivers such as the Satluj, Beas and Ravi The
land is mainly plain, and agriculture is the main occupation of the
people. About 86 per cent of the land area is under cultivation with 60
per cent of the irrigation through tubewells, and 40 per cent through
canals. The State is the granary of India, with wheat, rice, maize,
pulses, oilseeds, mushroom, potatoes, tomatoes being cultivated and
exported. The major industries of the State are hand and machine tools,
auto parts, sports goods, hosiery and knitwear. All villages in Punjab
are electrified. The State has cold winters, severe summers, and average
annual rainfall is 62 cm.
