Dadra and Nagar Haveli was
constituted as a Union Territory on 11th August 1961. It is
predominantly a rural area inhabited by tribals who form 79 per cent of
the population. Forests cover about 40 per cent of its area. About
23,627 hectares of land are under cultivation. The main crops are rice,
hill millet, mango, sapota and bananas. A few of the industries in the
Union Territory are leather goods, textiles, engineering goods,
plastics, electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. All villages are
electrified. The climate is warm throughout the year, and average annual
rainfall is 225 cm.
