Haryana came into being on 1st
November 1966. It is mainly an agricultural State, with 75 per cent of
people depending on agriculture for sustenance. Irrigation is done
through a network of canals of the river Yamuna and 358,000 tubewells.
Rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, oilseeds, soyabean and fruit and
vegetables are the major crops grown. In 1970, it achieved 100 per cent
rural electrification. All villages are connected with metalled roads.
Automobiles, motor cycles, tractors, sanitary wares, textiles and
carpets are some of the major industries. The summers are hot, winters
cold and the average annual rainfall is 59 cm.
