Research & Evaluation

The Department sponsors research and evaluation studies in the field of women and child development with a view to filling up information/data gaps for better programme., planning and implementation. Since 1986-87, 240 research studies have been sponsored. Assistance is also been extended to organise seminars/ workshops/ conferences.

Some of the important studies sponsored include studies on women workers in unorganised sector, Baseline surveys on the status of adolescent girls, Survey of credit facilities for women; Evaluation of working women hostels; National Evaluation of the ICDS services programme, Evaluation of the scheme of Creches/Day Care Centres for Working and Ailing Women's Children, Evaluation of the Scheme of Early Childhood Education, Study on implementing Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 , Supplementary Nutrition Programme, Impact of ICDS Services on SC/ST population, Evaluation of Working Women's Hostels, Education of Girl Children, Study on Female Infanticide, Impact of Structural Adjust Programmes on Women, Health and Nutrition problems of rural women and children; Prohbibition in Haryana to study socio-economic transformation of women's status; A study on Early marriages of rural women and their status etc.

During, 4 Research Studies and 8 Workshops/Seminars have been sponsored.

Organisational Assistance to Voluntary Organisations

Under the scheme, grant-in-aid is given to voluntary organisations for meeting the deficit in expenditure on salaries and allowances of professionals and house-keeping staff of their central offices. About 30 organisations are being considered for sanction of grant.

Information and Mass Education Activities

The programme of information and mass education of the Department aims to generate public awareness about issues like empowerment of women, care of young children, pregnant women and nursing mothers in rural and urban areas and status of girl child etc. The communication efforts of the Department also seek to create public information against social evils like dowry, child marriages and atrocities against women. The Department has brought out a booklet titled "50 years of Child Development : the Challenges Ahead" and a supplement "Child Survival and Development : A History Perspective", on the occasion of Universal Children's Day. A number of advertisements on various occasions like Children's Day, International Women's Day, Breast Feeding Week, National Children's Festival etc. were released in various national and regional News Papers. The widely acclaimed weeking radio programme "Naya Savera" produced and sponsored by the Department in 12 languages has completed 15 years of its broadcast.
 

Implementation of 15 Point Programme for the Welfare of Minorities

The Department is implementing various developmental programmes in 41 districts of 11 States which are educationally backward and have concentration of minority communities. The Schemes are as follows:-

Special Component Plan(SCP) for Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub-Plan(TSP) for Scheduled Tribes

The Programmes for women and children implemented by the Department are primarily directed towards the most disadvantaged sections of society like Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other economically Backward Classes living in backward areas, tribal areas and urban slums.

Financial Allocation

The 1997-98 financial allocations for the Department have been Rs.900.00 crores (Plan) and Rs. crores (Non-Plan). The scheme/programme-wise details are given in the appendix.


Development of Management Information System

The National Informatics Centre(NIC) has established a computer centre in the Department and installed a Pentium Processor based Winows NT server and a Pentium Processor based Unix Server. Local Area Network has been establisehed in the Department and varous facilities like information sharing,E-mail,  graphical user interface(GUI) based INTERNET surfing have been provided.NIC continued to provide software, hardware and consultancy support to Department in developing computer based Management Information System.

Reservation for SCs and STs

Reservation Policy of Government of India is being scruplously followed in the Department.
